At Houndsfield Primary School we believe that PSHE plays a fundamental part in our curriculum as we support children to obtain the knowledge and skills they need to manage their lives now and in the future.
Through PSHE we aim to promote healthy, independent and responsible members of society. We encourage all our pupils to play a positive role in contributing to school life and the wider community through class, school councils and supporting nominated charities. Our pupils are given opportunities in PSHE lessons and assemblies to develop confidence, self-motivation and an understanding of their rights and responsibilities within our diverse society.
We also aim to embed our school values: Respect, Equality, Achievement, Courage and Honesty. Respect: we will teach respecting similarities and differences between people, the importance of self-respect and respecting others and how to respect our environment. Equality: we will teach inclusivity and diversity; we will reflect the law (including the Equality Act 2010) as it applies to relationships so that young people clearly understand what the law allows and does not allow. Achievement: we will teach how we can achieve positive and caring friendships, how positive relationships should help us achieve our full potential, to recognise and celebrate strengths. Courage: we will teach how to seek help and speak up if family relationships or friendships make them feel unhappy or unsafe and how to speak up if they are worried about theirs or others’ mental or physical wellbeing. Honesty: we will teach the importance of being honest in relationships with friends and families and to be honest about their feelings and emotions.
Personal, Social, Health Education (PSHE) is delivered within three strands: Relationships Education, Physical Health and Mental Wellbeing and Living in the Wider World.
Relationships Education will put in place the building blocks needed for positive and safe relationships, including with family, friends and online. Your child will be taught what a relationship is, what friendship is, what family means and who can support them. In an age-appropriate way, we will cover how to treat each other with kindness, consideration and respect.
Relationships Education is split into 5 topics:
Health Education aims to give your child the information they need to make good decisions about their own health and wellbeing, to recognise issues in themselves and others, and to seek support as early as possible when issues arise.
Health Education is split into 8 topics:
Living in the Wider World is split into 3 topics:
Sex Education is delivered separately to year 6 children and has a separate policy to outline the aspects that will be covered. Parents can choose to withdraw their child from the Relationships and Sex Education element of PSHE, but not the science topic of animals including humans which covers puberty and life cycles. Parents are invited to attend a meeting about the sex education lessons before it is taught to their child in year 6.
